The hounds will descend on Orange County en masse April 16-17 for the annual Hounds Classic.

The dog show, which is one of the largest American Kennel Club events here in Southern California, will be held at Oak Canyon Park in Silverado Canyon where hundreds of hounds will compete for ribbons and all-around glory.

The event is sponsored by the Western Hound Association of Southern California.

Lou Guerrero, the show chairman, expects more than 1,400 dogs will be entered to strut their stuff.

“We have judges coming in from England, Ireland, Italy and the Netherlands,” he said.

The show offers visitors and dog fans a chance to see an AKC-sanctioned show up close. Spectators can mingle with bassets, basenjis, wolfhounds, Borzoi, dachshunds, Afghans, fox hounds, bloodhounds, whippets, salukis, Rhodesian ridgebacks and more under shady trees.

The Hounds Classic is free to the public and open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (April 16-17). There will be refreshments, catered food, and plenty of furry entertainment for the whole family.

Parking: $5. The park is at 5305 Santiago Canyon Road.

For breed enthusiasts, you can find the judging program at the Jack Bradshaw website.
